Day-Biting mosquitoes have increased throughout the Americas

Dengue Fever, Chikungunya and Zika Virus transmitted by day-biting mosquitoes have increased throughout the tropical and sub-tropical Americas.   The illnesses are not currently vaccine preventable and can all cause similar symptoms including fever, body aches and pains and more severe symptoms which can include organ dysfunction.

Travellers are advised to continue to practice strict daytime and nighttime insect precautions when travelling abroad to endemic areas.  Travelers should be seeking travel health advise to ensure they are aware of proper prevention methods; it is recommended to see a travel clinic a minimum of 4-6 weeks prior to departure when possible.

Dengue Fever, Chikungunya and Zika Virus are all spread through mosquitoes which bite during the day and are common in urban areas where there is standing water.  There are 4 strains of Dengue fever that are found globally.  Chikungunya was found in 2013 and is found throughout many tropical and subtropical regions.  Zika virus is circulating to the Americas throughout the last decade.

Special precautions should be taken for pregnant women travelling to endemic areas.   Women planning to become or are currently pregnant should be discuss their travel plans with a health care provider prior to travelling abroad.  There is a possible association in mother’s infected with Zika Virus and serious health effects on the unborn baby.
