Egypt-Travel Advisory

OFFICIAL WARNING: Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada advises against all travel to Egypt due to demonstrations and protests, civil unrest, high levels of criminal activity and violence throughout the country, and the threat of terrorist attacks.

Civil unrest and violent demonstrations have been occurring in many parts of Egypt since January 23, 2011. There are reports of large scale arrests, property damage including looting and arson, injuries, and deaths from injuries sustained during the protests.

Telecommunication services may be disrupted. A nationwide curfew (from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.) has been imposed. Access to some areas may be restricted due to increased security measures and military presence on the streets. Access to Cairo’s international airport may be difficult due to severe traffic disruptions. The border with the Gaza Strip is closed.

Canadians already in Egypt should consider leaving. They are strongly encouraged to register their travel details on the Registration of Canadians Abroad database, if they have not yet done so. They should also be extremely vigilant, avoid all unnecessary movement, avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings, monitor local news reports, follow the advice of local authorities and keep a supply of basic foods on hand. Canadians requiring emergency assistance may contact the Embassy of Canada in Cairo.
