World Rabies Day September 28, 2011

World Rabies Day

September 28 marks this year’s World Rabies Day. The Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) reminds travellers that there is risk of rabies transmission in many countries around the world.  Rabies is a viral infection that is transmitted to humans through close contact with the saliva of an infected animal. This happens most often by a bite or scratch or by licks on broken skin or mucous membranes, such as the eyes, nose or mouth. Worldwide, dog bites are responsible for most human cases of rabies.
