Hong Kong: Japanese Encephalitis
According to Hong Kong’s Department of Health, 1 locally acquired case of Japanese encephalitis has been reported since July 2011 in Yuen Long District in the northwest New Territories, a rural farming area rarely visited by foreigners. This is the first report of a local case since 2005. (Two imported cases were reported in 2007.) Vaccination is not recommended for urban areas or short visits to usual rural tourist sites. Evening and nighttime insect precautions are recommended.
