According to WHO, 4 confirmed cases of wild poliovirus have been reported in the remote Hotan Prefecture, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region near the Pakistan border since July 2011. The last indigenous case of polio in China was reported in 1994. One clinical case often represents hundreds of asymptomatic infections in the population. One adult booster of polio vaccine for travelers to the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region (in addition to an adequate primary series according to normal indications) is recommended.
